SEOUL, Oct. 10 (Yonhap) -- Seoul prosecutors on Monday indicted 22 members of a local civic group on charges of violating the law in the process of holding so-called anti-campaigns against certain candidates ahead of the April general elections.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office said the defendants are suspected of holding rallies 11 times in front of the election offices of 10 candidates of the ruling Saenuri Party ahead of the polls without reporting the rallies to the authorities.

Prosecutors said the civic group members are also accused of unlawfully selecting the "worst candidates" through an online poll about a week before the elections took place. The investigators said the survey was carried out without meeting the conditions for conducting a public opinion poll as outlined by local election law.

The civic society has been criticizing the authorities since police raided the activists' offices in June, saying they are abusing power against the civic group's legitimate exercise of their rights.

Saenuri, on the other hand, has long accused many progressive civic groups of bias and favoring opposition parties.
