SEOUL, Dec. 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and the United States will hold a high-level meeting next week to discuss cooperation on nuclear deterrence against North Korea, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.

In October, the two sides agreed to launch the Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group (EDSCG) during a "two plus two" meeting involving their foreign and defense chiefs in Washington.

The first round of the group's meetings will be held on Tuesday (local time) in Washington with high-ranking foreign affairs and defense officials from both countries on hand, according to the ministry.

Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam and U.S. Assistant Secretary for International Security and Nonproliferation Thomas Countryman will be among the participants.

They are expected to discuss a wide range of measures including military and diplomatic steps intended to put more pressure on North Korea to give up its nuclear programs, the ministry said.
