SEOUL, Jan. 2 (Yonhap) -- Renault Samsung Motors Co., the local unit of French automaker Renault S.A., said Monday its global sales jumped 12 percent from the previous year in 2016 on a sharp increase in domestic sales.

The carmaker said its annual sales came to 257,345, compared with 229,081 cars sold globally in 2015.

The sales tally marks the highest since 2010, and the second highest in the company's history.

Domestic sales surged 38.8 percent on-year to 111,101 units last year, more than offsetting a slight drop in exports.

Outbound shipments declined 2 percent to 146,244 vehicles.

In December, the carmakers' overall sales jumped 28 percent on-year to 32,617.

Domestic sales spiked 37.5 percent to 14,078 cars, while exports also surged 21 percent to 18,539, it said.
