S. Korean shares up in late morning trading

SEOUL, Jan. 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korean shares slightly rose late Wednesday morning, but the market's sentiment was subdued as investors took a breather following gains in the previous session.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 0.96 point, or 0.05 percent, to 2,044.93 as of 11:20 a.m.

Large caps traded mixed with market kingpin Samsung Electronics falling 0.71 percent, and global chipmaker SK hynix down 1.59 percent.

AmorePacific, the largest cosmetics maker, dipped 1.12 percent.

In contrast, top automaker Hyundai Motor rose 0.98 percent, and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors traded 1.1 percent higher.

POSCO, the No.1 steelmaker, declined 0.59 percent.

Naver, the operator of the country's top Internet portal, rose 3.26 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,206.90 won against the U.S. dollar, down 3.4 won from the previous session's close.
