SEOUL, Jan. 5 (Yonhap) -- The Japanese animation "Your Name" directed by Japan's genius animator Makoto Shinkai has snatched the top spot of local box offices on its opening day, pushing aside the previous No. 1 "Master," data showed Thursday.

Statistics released by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) showed that the animation film, screened at 555 theaters across the country, garnered 138,028 moviegoers Wednesday, the day of its release.

The tallies put the South Korean action-flick "Master," which had been in the lead for two weeks since the day of its release, in the runner-up position, although the film is still on its way to hit the imminent 6 million milestone.

The Japanese romantic-fantasy, which had also previously topped the box offices of China, Hong Kong, Thailand and Taiwan, unravels the miraculous fates and story surrounding a Tokyo high school boy named Taki and a rural high school girl named Mitsuha, who one day switch bodies.

The Hollywood sci-fi "Passengers" and the South Korean comedy "Because I Love You," released on the same day as "Your Name," came in third and fourth, gathering 85,045 attendees and 44,942 viewers, respectively, while "Misbehavior" attracted 22,975. Following that is the action movie "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," which fell to 9th place.
