WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is considering naming a former journalist and Marine as his top White House adviser for Asian affairs, sources said Thursday.

Matt Pottinger, 43, an Asia expert who covered China for Reuters and the Wall Street Journal from 1998 to 2005 before joining the Marine Corps and serving three combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan until 2010, is being considered a top candidate for the job, the sources said.

Last month, the Financial Times also reported that Pottinger is a leading candidate for the post, saying he served at the same time in Afghanistan as former Army Gen. Mike Flynn, who has been appointed Trump's national security adviser.

Pottinger and Flynn also co-authored a report on fixing problems with U.S. intelligence operations in Afghanistan.

Last month, Trump's transition team spokesman, Jason Miller, also said that Pottinger was being considered for Asian affairs adviser, but no decision had been made.
