TOKYO, Jan. 6 (Yonhap) -- Japan called in its ambassador to South Korea on Friday in protest against a statue symbolizing the victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery in front of its consulate building, local media reports showed.

The statue, which was installed at the end of last year by a civic group before the Japanese Consulate building in the southern port city of Busan, has become a diplomatic thorn between the two countries, as Tokyo demands its immediate removal.
