SEOUL, Jan. 6 (Yonhap) -- National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun said Friday that January's extraordinary parliamentary session is the "right time" to pass reform bills.

South Korean parties had agreed in late December to hold an extra session starting Monday through Jan. 20 to deal with urgent economic bills amid a prolonged slowdown.

Chung said the session will be an opportunity for the ruling and opposition parties to cooperate, and pass key pending bills and reform measures.

The speaker said the role of the National Assembly is crucial, especially amid the economic slump and changing the external political environment.

Chung also expressed gratitude to lawmakers for passing this year's budget bill on time in December.
