Stocks open higher on tech gains

SEOUL, Jan. 9 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks opened higher on Monday on gains in Samsung Electronics and other tech shares.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 1.12 points, or 0.05 percent, to 2,050.24 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

Most large caps traded mixed with market kingpin Samsung Electronics rising 2.49 percent.

Chipmaker SK hynix was up 1.65 percent.

Top automaker Hyundai Motor rose 0.66 percent and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors was down 0.86 percent.

POSCO, the No.1 steelmaker, declined 1.20 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,202 won against the U.S. dollar, down 9.95 won from the previous session's close.
