SEOUL, Jan. 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and the United States have agreed to push for joint research and information sharing for the safe use of nuclear energy, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.

The agreement was reached in a meeting in Washington on Monday (local time) between South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Ahn Chong-ghee and U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, according to the ministry.

Under the agreement, both promised to jointly carry out research on safe transport, storage and disposal of spent nuclear fuel, while sharing information on relevant techniques, the ministry noted.

The two will also conduct research on global nuclear fuel markets, and based on the results, they will cooperate in finding ways of guaranteeing a safe fuel supply to nuclear power plants under any circumstances, according to the ministry.
