S. Korea's popularity grows as tourist destination: survey

SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Yonhap) -- The popularity of South Korea as a tourist destination has grown in recent years apparently due to K-pop contents making inroads into the global market, a survey showed Thursday.

The recent online poll of 12,000 people in 20 countries around the world by the Korea Tourism Organization said 53.2 percent of those surveyed recognized South Korea as a major tourist destination and that 57.5 percent picked South Korea as a preferred sightseeing location.

The figures represent a gradual rise for the third consecutive year.

Thailand topped the list in terms of awareness about South Korea as 84 percent of Thai people surveyed recognized South Korea as a major tourist destination, up from 79.6 percent in 2015.

China came in second with 81.6 percent, followed by Indonesia (70.9 percent), Vietnam (69.6 percent) and Hong Kong (68.7 percent).

South Korea was a preferred tourist destination for about 78.3 percent of the Vietnamese surveyed.

The comparable figures were 77.7 percent for Thailand and the Philippines, 76.8 percent for China and 75.9 percent for Indonesia.

More than one-third (4,585) of those polled said they were planning to visit South Korea within a year.
