SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korean women spend more than three times more time on carrying out household chores compared with men, a local report showed Sunday, highlighting the deeply entrenched gender role in society.

The findings by the Seoul Foundation of Women and Family (SFWF) showed married women with jobs spent around 3 1/2 hours a day on household chores, compared with slightly less than an hour for their husbands.

Broken down, a women spent just over two hours and 20 minutes on preparing meals, cleaning and taking care of things in the house versus 19 minutes for men.

Women also spent much more time taking care of the children and their spouses, and on shopping than a man.

The foundation linked to the Seoul city government said that even in regards with the family car maintenance, and the taking care of plants and pets, a woman spent more time on such chores on average than her husband.

The latest report then showed that men spent slightly less than seven hours at paid jobs compared with about 5 1/2 hours for women, with wives getting 10 minutes less sleep per night than their husbands. Women, moreover, spent less time eating meals and snacks compared with their spouses.

In regards to relaxing after work or on weekends men enjoyed 49 minutes more free time on average on a daily basis than women. The average leisure time stood at just over four hours for a man.

The SFWF said that the numbers reflect the reality of the division of labor at homes despite women nowadays playing an active part as bread earners.

In Korean society there was a strong tendency for women to bear the brunt of household chores in the past although at the time they were less likely to have jobs of their own and were full-time homemakers.

The report, meanwhile, showed that the rise in income for a couple resulted in less time being allocated to taking care of home-related chores and less sleep for both men and women.
