S. Korean shares open slightly lower

SEOUL, Jan. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks started a bit lower Wednesday following overnight losses on Wall Street.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) fell 1.46 points, or 0.07 percent, to 2,070.41 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 58.96 points, or 0.30 percent, to 19,826.77.

Market leader Samsung Electronics gained 0.87 percent and global chipmaker SK hynix was off 0.20 percent.

Front-running automaker Hyundai Motor also shed 0.98 percent, with state-run utility firm Korea Electric Power Corp. declining 0.68 percent.

The South Korean currency was trading at 1,163.75 won against the U.S. dollar, up 10.75 won from the previous session's close.
