S. Korean shares open higher on large cap gains

SEOUL, Jan. 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korean shares opened higher Tuesday on advances by large market caps.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) added 0.96 point, or 0.05 percent, to 2,066.95 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

Most large caps were in positive terrain.

Market bellwether Samsung Electronics gained 0.47 percent and global chipmaker SK hynix jumped 2.17 percent.

On the other hand, top automaker Hyundai Motor lost 0.67 percent and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors shed 2.03 percent. Top auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis Co. declined 0.73 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,161.70 won against the U.S. dollar, up 3.70 won from the previous session's close.
