S. Korean shares open higher on large cap gains

SEOUL, Feb. 1 (Yonhap) -- South Koran shares opened sharply higher on Wednesday, helped by advances in large market caps.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) added 10.61 points, or 0.51 percent, to 2,078.18 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

Market bellwether Samsung Electronics advanced 0.30 percent, while global chipmaker SK hynix spiked 1.30 percent.

Top automaker Hyundai Motor remained flat, but its smaller affiliate Kia Motors gained 0.14 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,152.85 won against the U.S. dollar, up 9.25 won from the previous session's close.
