S. Korean stocks up in late morning trade

SEOUL, Feb. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks traded slightly higher Thursday morning, aided by Samsung Electronics, the country's top market cap.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) advanced 3.78 points, or 0.18 percent, to 2,084.26 as of 11:20 a.m.

Top market cap Samsung Electronics rose 0.92 percent while major chipmaker SK hynix was trading 0.93 percent lower.

POSCO, the country's top steelmaker, also shed 1.08 percent.

Automakers remained in negative terrain.

Hyundai Motor, the country's top automaker, fell 1.79 percent while its smaller affiliate Kia Motors slipped 1.37 percent.

The South Korean won was trading at 1,153.75 won against the U.S. greenback, up 4.35 won from the previous session's close.
