Pop singer BoA joins season 2 of 'Produce 101'

SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korean pop diva BoA will appear on the new season of hit audition survival show "Produce 101" in a host capacity, cable TV station Mnet said Thursday.

In the survival audition show launched in 2016, a group of viewers called "public producers" pick through a popularity vote members of a new project idol group from a pool of 101 trainees from various entertainment companies as well as the group's roster, concept and debut song. Season one of the program featured a pool of female singers and culminated in the formation of the 11-member project girl group I.O.I and became a much hyped show.

S.M. Entertainment's Boa was hired to represent the public producers in the second season, acting as a bridge connecting the competitors and viewers, delivering missions to participants and announcing results of each competitions, according to the broadcaster.

"I'm happy to join season 2 of 'Produce 101.' I hope that participants can mature on stage through their experience," BoA said.

The new season, which will air in the first half of this year, will feature a total of 101 male idol star trainees competing to make the cut in a project boy band.

Ahn Joon-young, the show's director, said he looks forward to BoA offering tips and advice to the trainees throughout the broadcast.
