SEOUL, April 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will provide a total of $14 million worth of humanitarian aid this year to war-torn Syria and neighboring countries, the foreign ministry said Thursday.

The aid plan was announced at the Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region held on Wednesday (local time), according to the ministry.

South Korea had provided a combined $35 million to Syria and other countries in the region from 2012-2016, the ministry said.

A U.N. report showed that around 13.5 million people in Syria are in need of humanitarian aid due to the prolonged civil war. Its neighboring countries including Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon are suffering from a massive influx of refugees from Syria.

Separately, the ministry said that it has decided to provide $300,000 worth of humanitarian aid to Colombia which was recently hit hard by flooding.
