SEOUL, April 7 (Yonhap) -- South Korea on Friday expressed its backing of the U.S. airstrike against an air base in Syria as it denounced the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

South Korea "has a firm stance that the use and proliferation of chemical weapons can never be condoned under any circumstances and to do that the international community should work together," South Korea's foreign ministry said in a statement.

The statement also backed the stern U.S. action against the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

The U.N. said the alleged chemical attack in the town of Khan Shaykhun killed at least 70 people.

Kim Won-soo, the U.N. High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, told the U.N. Security Council that the chemical attack, if confirmed, would constitute the single largest chemical weapons attack in Syria since the attack on eastern Ghouta in August 2013.
