SEOUL, April 10 (Yonhap) -- Five South Korean climbers have been killed in a snow slide at a mountain near Vancouver, Canada, according to a foreign media report Monday.

"Five climbers from South Korea fell to their deaths from a snow ledge that gave way near Vancouver," AFP said citing a local police source.

"On Saturday afternoon (local time) a hiker contacted authorities concerned because of the collapse of the cornice on the peak of Mount Harvey," it added.

Search and rescue efforts had been hampered due to harsh weather conditions and instability of the snowpack, but the report said that the bodies were found about 500 meters from the 1,600-meter-high mountain Sunday.

The identities of the dead have not been confirmed. Citing a local report, however, AFP said they were "experienced climbers and South Korean nationals."

South Korean consulate officials in Canada are trying to confirm the report on the accident, the foreign ministry in Seoul said.
