SEOUL, April 10 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean national was among five climbers who were killed in a recent small avalanche on a mountain near Vancouver, Canada, Seoul's foreign ministry said Monday.

"The Korean consulate in Vancouver has found that one of the five dead is a Korean national while the others are Canadians," an official from the ministry said.

Earlier in the day, AFP reported that five experienced Korean hikers fell to their deaths from a snow ledge that gave way on Saturday afternoon (local time), citing a local police source.

The ministry will extend assistance to the family of the victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, so that they can fly to Canada as soon as possible, the official added.

The report said a hiker contacted authorities concerned because of the collapse of a cornice at the peak of Mount Harvey.

Search and rescue efforts had been hampered due to harsh weather conditions and instability of the snowpack, and the bodies were found about 500 meters down the mountainside on Sunday, according to the report.
