Major Korean shipbuilders set to attend offshore tech fair next month
SEOUL, April 19 (Yonhap) -- Senior executives of major South Korean shipyards, such as Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., are scheduled to attend an offshore technology conference in the United States next month, in a bid to assess offshore facility trends and share information, industry sources said Wednesday.
During the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), slated to be held in Houston, Texas, from May 1 to 4, participants will exchange ideas and opinions to advance scientific and technical knowledge for offshore resources.
OTC is a major event for the oil and gas industry, featuring more than 2,500 exhibitors, as well as attendees representing 120 countries.
Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., a major shipyard here, plans to send a 20-member delegation to the fair where it plans to hold talks with representatives from major oil firms.
Some 10 members from Samsung Heavy Industries, including its President Park Dae-young, will be in Houston as well. The shipyard is to hold a series of meetings with its clients to exchange the latest information on the offshore facility sector.
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. is also examining the possibility of attending the gathering.
South Korean shipyards suffered huge losses in 2015 and 2016 due to a delay in the construction of offshore facilities and a fall in new orders.
