SEOUL, Nov. 31 (Yonhap) -- The latest commentary trailer for the upcoming Korean historical film "The Battleship Island" takes a look at Korean forced laborers' desperate attempt to escape Japan's Hishima Island where they were sent to work during World War II.

The action flick tells the story of the Koreans who risk their lives to escape from the island, better known as "Battleship Island" for its shape resembling a warship.

It is based on the hidden history of Battleship Island, where many Koreans were forced to work and died during the 1910-1945 Japanese colonial period.

Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan of "Veteran" (2015) and starring Hwang Jung-min, So Ji-sub, Song Joong-ki and Lee Jung-hyun, it is one of the most anticipated Korean films of 2017.

The trailer carries the director and main cast's sincere comments on the motive behind making and taking part in the film, and their feelings toward the island designated as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2015.

The film is to open in July in South Korea.
