GOYANG, Gyeonggi Province, June 17 (Yonhap) -- An annual badminton tournament for multicultural families in South Korea kicked off in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, on Saturday.

More than 700 families from across the country, including around 300 players, participated in the event co-hosted by Yonhap News Agency, a leading newswire based in Seoul, and the Goyang City Sports Council.

It's co-sponsored by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Goyang city government.

"Now, multicultural families have become a dignified part of the Republic of Korea and a precious element to protect diversity in our society," Park No-hwang, president and CEO of Yonhap, said in a message read by Shim Soo-hwa, managing director for marketing at Yonhap.

Gender Minister Kang Eun-hee said her ministry will make every effort to help multicultural families in the country live a stable life and take part in more social activities.

The badminton event started in 2000.
