S. Korean diplomat to visit Pakistan to raise safety awareness

All Headlines 09:52 July 03, 2017

SEOUL, July 3 (Yonhap) -- A senior South Korean diplomat in charge of consular affairs headed for Pakistan on Monday on a trip to raise safety awareness among Korean nationals.

Han Dong-man, ambassador for overseas Koreans and consular affairs, plans to stay there throughout this week and meet Korean nationals to remind them of heightened safety worries, according to a ministry official.

Safety concerns among South Korean nationals remain high after two Korean missionaries are under investigation for running a language school in connection with two Chinese recently abducted and killed by the terrorist group Islamic State.

The Chinese used to work at the school, which is suspected of serving as a cover for missionaries dispatched to the Muslim country.

Last week, the foreign ministry held a meeting with representatives of major missionary groups in Seoul to remind them of the rising security concerns in such countries as Pakistan, Indonesia and the Philippines.
