SEOUL, July 4 (Yonhap) -- The top diplomats of South Korea and the United States held an emergency phone conversation on Tuesday to discuss how to jointly deal with North Korea's recent launch of a missile which the country claimed was an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the foreign ministry here said.

The talks between Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson came after North Korea fired off a ballistic missile in the morning.

The North later announced that it was the country's first ICBM launch and claimed the Hwasong-14 ICBM reached an altitude of 2,802 kilometers and flew 933 km for 39 minutes before hitting an intended target in the East Sea.
