Moon announces S. Korea's US$10 mln pledge to global initiative for women
SEOUL, July 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has pledged US$10 million to a new global fund aimed at promoting and fostering increased job opportunities for women in developing countries, the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said Saturday.
The pledge was made by President Moon Jae-in at the inaugural meeting of the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) in Hamburg, Germany, according to Cheong Wa Dae.
Moon is currently on a trip to the European country for the Group of 20 summit scheduled to end later Saturday (German time).
"The government plans to continue its support for economically marginalized women in developing and less developed countries and expand its role as a responsible state to help the international community achieve its sustainable development goals," Cheong Wa Dae said in a press release.
The We-Fi is a new fund to be operated by the World Bank.
As of Tuesday, nine countries, including the United States, Germany and Saudi Arabia, have pledged $260 million for the fund aimed at helping marginalized women, and their small and medium-sized employers in developing and less developed countries, according to Cheong Wa Dae.
