SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has decided to provide US$100,000 in humanitarian aid to volcano-hit Vanuatu, the foreign ministry said Friday.

The government of Vanuatu ordered the evacuation of around 11,000 residents of Ambae, a Vanuatuan island, after declaring a state of emergency Sept. 25 over a volcanic eruption there.

The emergency declaration was lifted Oct. 20 and the evacuated residents returned to the island, but they are suffering water shortages and agricultural damage after volcanic ash and acid rain resulted in water pollution, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here.

"The upcoming assistance is expected to help the affected residents rebuild and stabilize their lives after the eruption," the ministry said.
