WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 (Yonhap) -- A senior United Nations official who is visiting North Korea was not carrying a message from the U.S. government, the State Department said Tuesday.

Jeffrey Feltman, the U.N.'s undersecretary general for political affairs, arrived in Pyongyang earlier in the day on a four-day visit that includes talks with Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho.

The visit has drawn attention amid escalating tensions over North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, especially after its latest long-range missile launch last week.

"He's not traveling -- I want to make this clear -- with any kind of message from the U.S. government," Heather Nauert, State Department spokeswoman, told a regular press briefing. "He's going on behalf of the U.N., not the U.S. government."

The U.N. earlier said Feltman will discuss "issues of mutual interest and concern" with North Korean government officials.
