SEOUL, Dec. 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's government on Wednesday convened an emergency meeting of related ministries to discuss ways to curb cryptocurrency speculation amid growing concerns about financial damage to local investors.

The meeting brought together senior officials from the ministries of justice, finance, science and ICT, and the Financial Services Commission, the Korea Communications Commission, the Fair Trade Commission and the National Tax Service.

Cryptocurrencies, such as bitcoin and ethereum, have rapidly gained popularity in recent years. South Korea is home to one of the world's largest bitcoin exchanges, with about 1 million people estimated to have the best-known digital currency.
