Seoul shares extend gains in late morning trading

SEOUL, Dec. 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks extended gains late Wednesday morning as institutions remained net buyers, offsetting net selling by individuals and foreigners.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index rose 9.24 points, or 0.38 percent, to 2,470.24 as of 11:20 a.m.

Institutional investors bought 190.79 billion won (US$175 million) worth of stocks, while foreigners and individuals sold a combined 212 billion won stocks.

Automobiles, steel and domestic stocks led gains across the board.

Top carmaker Hyundai Motor Co. advanced 0.67 percent, leading steelmaker POSCO climbed 0.30 percent, and cosmetics giant AmorePacific Corp. was up 1.77 percent.

But market bellwether Samsung Electronics Co. fell 1.54 percent, and No. 2 chipmaker SK hynix Inc. declined 1.67 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,092.50 won against the U.S. dollar, down 0.10 won from the previous session's close.
