S. Korean stocks edge up late Tuesday morning

SEOUL, Jan. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks traded higher Tuesday morning on the back of gains in tech and chemical shares.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 4.79 points, or 0.19 percent, to 2,472.28 as of 11:20 a.m.

Market kingpin Samsung Electronics moved up 0.35 percent, and SK hynix, a major chipmaker, advanced 0.52 percent.

Leading chemicals firm LG Chem gained 0.62 percent, and AmorePacific, the country's top cosmetics maker, jumped 2.46 percent.

Hyundai Motor, the No. 1 automaker, meanwhile, surrendered 1.92 percent, and the largest auto parts maker, Hyundai Mobis, was also down 1.71 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,066.20 won against the U.S. dollar, up 4.30 won from the previous session's close.
