Trump: Inter-Korean talks are 'good thing'

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that resumed dialogue between South and North Korea was a "good thing" and took credit for making it happen.

On Wednesday, the two Koreas reopened a communication channel at the shared border village of Panmunjom after a two-year hiatus. The move followed Seoul's proposal to hold high-level talks to discuss the interest expressed by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in sending a team to next month's Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

"With all of the failed 'experts' weighing in, does anybody really believe that talks and dialogue would be going on between North and South Korea right now if I wasn't firm, strong and willing to commit our total 'might' against the North," Trump tweeted. "Fools, but talks are a good thing!"

The U.S. president has warned he could "totally destroy" North Korea if it continues to threaten his country with nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

He has also said that his top diplomat, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, was "wasting his time" trying to reach out to the North Korean regime to discuss its weapons programs.
