SEOUL, Jan. 10 (Yonhap) -- Russia welcomed the results of the recent talks between South and North Korea, expecting the latest development to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula, a statement showed Wednesday.

During their high-level meeting Tuesday, North Korea accepted Seoul's proposal to hold military talks to reduce tensions and send a delegation to next month's Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. It was their first formal dialogue in two years.

"We welcome the agreements reached at a high-level meeting between North Korea and South Korea," Russia said in the statement issued by its foreign ministry. "We hope that the implementation of these agreements will help defuse tensions on the Korean Peninsula and strengthen stability in this subregion."

Russia expressed hope for "further development of the nascent positive trend in the inter-Korean dialogue," adding it is ready to provide "all-round assistance to this process."

"We are convinced that dialogue is the only way towards finding a mutually acceptable solution to problems on the peninsula in a peaceful, political and diplomatic manner," Russia said in the statement.

Tuesday's agreement marked a major breakthrough following years of frosty ties between the two Koreas and last year's heightened tensions over the North's nuclear and missile provocations.
