SEOUL, Feb. 1 (Yonhap) -- Renault Samsung Motors Corp., the South Korean unit of French carmaker Renault S.A., said Thursday its January sales rose 7.9 percent from a year earlier on robust exports.

The carmaker sold 21,847 vehicles last month, up from 20,256 units a year ago, Renault Samsung said in a statement.

Domestic sales fell 14 percent to 6,402 units from 7,440. But exports climbed to 15,445 vehicles from 12,816, it said.

Increased shipments of the Renault Koleos (or QM6) and Rogue sport utility vehicles boosted the monthly sales results amid rising demand for SUVs in global markets, a company spokesman said.

Renault Samsung builds Nissan Motor Corp.'s Rogue SUV for export at its plant in Busan, 453 kilometers south of Seoul.

For the whole of 2017, the company sold a combined 276,808 units, up 7.6 percent from the 257,345 units tallied in the previous year.
