SEOUL, Feb. 6 (Yonhap) -- Lotte Chemical Corp., the chemical unit of Lotte Group, will invest 3 trillion won (US$2.7 billion) in creating an advanced chemical zone in South Korea's western areas, the industry ministry said Tuesday.

Huh Soo-young, who heads the chemical business unit of Lotte Group, made the pledge in a meeting with government policymakers -- including Lee In-ho, vice minister of trade, industry and energy -- at a petrochemical complex in Seosan, 150 kilometers south of Seoul, according to the ministry.

South Korea is pushing to transform 2 square kilometers inside the industrial complex, an area about three-fifths the size of Central Park, into a specialized zone for advanced chemical firms.
