LG Innotek aiming to become UV LED market leader in 2018

All Headlines 15:09 March 07, 2018

SEOUL, March 7 (Yonhap) -- LG Innotek Co., an electronics part manufacturer under LG Group, said Wednesday it is aiming to become a global leader in the ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV LED) sector this year.

According to the industry tracker LEDinside, Japan's Nichia stood as the biggest player in the sterilization UV LED market in 2016, whereas LG Innotek stood at fourth place. Market watchers, however, said LG is presumed to have taken the second spot in 2017, casting brighter prospects for this year.

"UV LED will make our lives more clean and safer, which will contribute to improving our quality of life," Park Jong-seok, the head of LG Innotek said, claiming the company will play a greater role in the market in the future.

UV LED is a high-tech light source that emits ultraviolet rays. LG Innotek released a 100mW-level product in November last year that can be used for sterilization.

A higher number indicates stronger sterilization performance. Products that are applied for air or water purifiers are between 2 to 10mW. Experts say 100mW-level products can even sterilize flowing water.

"Compared to mercury-based lamps, UV LED products do not call for heating preparations and can sterilize immediately. They also function at low temperatures," Kang Dong-hyun, a professor of Seoul National University's College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, said, adding that there are many potential uses for 100mW-level products.

LG Innotek plans to showcase 150mW UV LED products in the third quarter, eventually seeking to release a 200mW version next year.
