Trump's appointment of hawkish secretary of state a 'warning' against N.K. leader: lawmaker

SEOUL, March 14 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to replace Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo is a warning and pressure directed at North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, a South Korean lawmaker claimed Wednesday.

Rep. Park Jie-won of the minor opposition Party for Democracy and Peace made the assessment, noting that Trump formed the new security lineup with foreign policy hawks, such as Pompeo and his successor-designate CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel, even as he agreed to hold talks with the North's leader.

"New Secretary Pompeo and new CIA Director Haspel have already worked in coordination with the Moon Jae-in government," Park wrote in a Facebook post. "President Trump's intention behind forming the team with hawkish officials appears to be pressure and warning against Kim Jong-un."

Park said that the Moon government should stably handle the situation by further strengthening the alliance and trust with the U.S. while making continued efforts to persuade the North's leader through the inter-Korean summit set for late April.
