SEOUL, April 25 (Yonhap) -- Police said Wednesday they raided the headquarters of Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. in an investigation into allegations that the company offered bribes to owners of properties for which it had bid to gain the sole rights for housing reconstruction.

The white collar unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency sent 37 officers to the company's main office in Jongno, central Seoul, to obtain evidence.

Police have been investigating the country's major builder based on intel that the firm gave out illegal gifts and cash last year to the owners of properties in an apartment complex subject to redevelopment in the affluent Seocho district in southern Seoul.

Police said they have already gathered sufficient evidence and testimonies to indicate crimes having been committed and Wednesday's raid was aimed at collecting additional evidence.

"We plan to decide whom to bring in for questioning once we finish analyzing the evidence," a police official said.

Police have been expanding their probe into similar suspected bribe offerings by top construction firms. They have carried out a raid at Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co.

Samsung C&T Corp. and GS Engineering & Construction Corp. are also said to be among those under a preliminary investigation by police.
