SEOUL -- U.S. officials are making preparations for a meeting in Singapore between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, a news report said Thursday.

Trump instructed his aide to get ready for his summit talks with Kim in the Southeast Asian city-state, according to CNN, which cited "two people familiar with the plans."

SEOUL -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said that his upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump will be a positive development in light of recent tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Kim made the remark to visiting U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday, the North's state media reported. Pompeo was in Pyongyang, a second visit to the reclusive country in more than a month.

(LEAD) S. Korean foreign minister to meet Pompeo in D.C.

SEOUL, May 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha will travel to the United States this week for talks with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on North Korea and alliance issues, her ministry announced Thursday.

Kang plans to hold her first official meeting with Pompeo as Seoul's top diplomat in Washington D.C. on Friday, and they will hold a joint press conference, the ministry said.

S. Korea proposes holding high-level inter-Korean talks next week: official

SEOUL -- South Korea has proposed holding high-level talks with North Korea next week to discuss follow-up measures on agreements reached by their leaders during their recent summit, a unification ministry official said Thursday.

Seoul's unification ministry made the proposal earlier this week and is currently awaiting the North's answer, the official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

S. Korea preparing to participate in table tennis competition in Pyongyang

SEOUL -- South Korea is preparing to participate in a table tennis event in North Korea next month, the sport's national governing body in Seoul said Thursday.

The Korea Table Tennis Association (KTTA) said it will soon submit entries to take part in the Pyongyang Open tournament in the North Korean capital for the first time from June 13 to 17.

Tax revenue tallied at 78.8 tln won in Q1

SEJONG -- South Korea's tax revenue was tallied at 78.8 trillion won (US$73 billion) in the first quarter of the year, 8.9 trillion won more than a year earlier, boosted by a rise in income and corporate taxes, data showed Thursday.

Income tax revenue amounted to 20.6 trillion won in the January-March period, up 3.1 trillion won from a year earlier, according to the data compiled by the finance ministry.

Seoul shares up 0.3 pct in late-morning trade

SEOUL -- South Korean stocks traded 0.3 percent higher late Thursday morning led by gains from tech and bank shares.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) had added 7.24 points, reaching 2,451.22, as of 11:20 a.m.

(LEAD) Kakao reports weak earnings in Q1 on increased costs

SEOUL -- Kakao Corp., the operator of South Korea's top mobile messenger KakaoTalk, on Thursday reported a weak performance in the first quarter due to increased costs.

Net profit reached 14.6 billion won (US$13.5 million) in the January-March period, down 73.1 percent from the previous year, the company said in a regulatory filing.
