Moon vows continued, increased exchanges with N. Korea

SEOUL -- President Moon Jae-in vowed to expand cross-border exchanges with North Korea on Friday, saying an increase in exchanges may eventually lead to the unification of the divided Koreas.

"Should the exchanges that were launched by South and North Korean art performance groups continue and should the South and the North meet more frequently," the president said while meeting a group of South Korean artists over lunch at his office Cheong Wa Dae. "I believe the people may freely come and go between the South and the North, and in the end, there may come a day when the South and the North will once again become one."

Finance minister vows to make slew of key policies bear fruit

SEJONG -- South Korea's chief economic policymaker said Friday that the government will do its utmost to ensure key policy measures bear fruit in the second year of the Moon Jae-in administration and that it will put more effort into creating quality jobs.

"Last year, the Korean economy grew 3.1 percent, and what is more important is that more citizens feel it through an improved quality of life," Finance Minister Kim Dong-yeon said in video footage posted on social media by the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae.

(LEAD) Seoul to confirm free will of former N. Korean restaurant workers

SEOUL -- South Korea's government said Friday that it is trying to verify a recent news report alleging some of the 12 female North Korean restaurant workers who defected to the South two years ago came to Seoul against their will.

The 12 former employees of a North Korean restaurant in China and one male manager arrived in Seoul in April 2016. At the time, South Korea's government said that had they defected of their own free will. But Pyongyang claimed that Seoul's spy agency had lured them and called for their immediate repatriation.

Parties watching impact of upcoming U.S.-N.K. summit on local elections

SEOUL -- South Korean ruling and opposition parties are gauging the possible impact of the upcoming summit between the United States and North Korea on local elections as the meeting will be held just one day before the poll.

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday that his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will be held in Singapore on June 12, the first-ever summit between sitting leaders of the two nations.

Now is golden chance to achieve denuclearization, peace on peninsula: unification minister

SEOUL -- South Korea's unification minister said Friday that the current situation provides a "golden opportunity" to achieve denuclearization and bring permanent peace to the Korean Peninsula.

Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon also voiced optimism about the outlook for implementation of the agreements reached by the leaders of the two Koreas during a summit held in late April at the truce village of Panmunjom.

(Yonhap Interview) IFAD chief urges S. Korea's technological support for developing countries

SEOUL -- A U.N. agricultural development agency on Friday urged South Korea to increase support for poor countries by sharing its growth experience and advanced technologies.

Gilbert Houngbo, the president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), also expressed his desire to strengthen cooperation with Seoul in advancing his vision of using agriculture not only as a means for food security but also as a "decent" way to earn a living and secure stable income.

S. Korea readying to announce roster for 2018 FIFA World Cup

SEOUL -- South Korea's preparations for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia will pick up some speed next week when they unveil the players heading to football's showpiece event.

Shin Tae-yong, head coach for the South Korean men's national football team, will announce his World Cup roster at a press conference in Seoul on Monday. It's hasn't been confirmed whether Shin will disclose the final list of 23 players on that day or just release a preliminary roster.
