SEOUL, May 17 (Yonhap) -- The U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) on Thursday dismissed a news report that Gen. Robert Bruce Abrams, commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command, has been tapped to lead American troops in South Korea.

"Any reports about the next USFK commander are purely speculative. No official announcement or nomination has been made," the USFK said in a press release.

"Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, USFK/CFC/UNC commander, who is in the third year of his tenure in Korea, continues to serve with pride and distinction focused on the strength of the ROK-U.S. alliance and stability and peace in the region," it added.

The local daily JoongAng Ilbo reported that Washington is expected to make the official announcement soon on Abrams' nomination to replace Brooks in July or August.
