SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo suggested Friday that his country and South Korea continue efforts to "create conditions" for Pyongyang-Washington talks, Seoul's foreign ministry said.

Pompeo made the remarks in his phone conversation with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha that came on the heels of a statement by a top North Korean diplomat.

In response to President Donald Trump's decision to call off a planned summit with the North's leader Kim Jong-un, Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan said Pyongyang is still willing to have dialogue.

Pompeo and Kang had "in-depth discussions" on the situations and a related strategy, according to Kang's ministry.

Pompeo briefed the minister on the background of Trump's decision and also stressed the U.S. has a resolve to negotiate with the North, it added.
