Senior N.K. official departs for Pyongyang from China after high-stakes visit to U.S.

BEIJING -- A senior North Korean official departed for Pyongyang through a Beijing airport on Monday, after a high-stakes visit to the United States to prepare for a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Kim Yong-chol, a vice chairman of the North's ruling Workers' Party's central committee, and other North Korean delegates boarded a plane of the North's flag carrier Air Koryo at Beijing Capital International Airport at around noon.

South Korea's nuclear envoy departs for Russia

SEOUL -- South Korea's top nuclear envoy on Monday departed for Russia as part of efforts to drum up international support for ongoing efforts to denuclearize North Korea and establish lasting peace on the peninsula.

Lee Do-hoon, representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs at Seoul's foreign ministry, plans to meet Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov in Moscow on Tuesday to exchange views on recent developments on the nuclear issue.

Inter-Korean cultural exchanges expected to rise after sports talks

SEOUL -- The two Koreas will discuss expanding cultural exchanges after resolving pending sports issues during high-level talks slated for later this month, the South Korean culture ministry said Monday.

On Friday, high-ranking officials of the two Koreas met at Panmunjom on the border to discuss various matters, including general-level military talks, as a step to implement agreements reached during the April 27 summit between President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Defense chiefs of S. Korea, Vietnam discuss peninsula security, arms industry cooperation

SEOUL -- The defense chiefs of South Korea and Vietnam held talks in Hanoi on Monday to discuss security on the Korean Peninsula and cooperation in the defense industry, Seoul officials said.

Defense Minister Song Young-moo met his Vietnamese counterpart Ngo Xuan Lich, after his trip to Singapore for an annual gathering of top defense officials.

SEOUL -- South Korean shares ended higher Monday as an upbeat U.S. jobs report and revived hopes for a U.S.-North Korea summit boosted investor sentiment, analysts said. The Korean won rose against the U.S. dollar.

The benchmark Korean Stock Price Index (KOSPI) added 8.8 points, or 0.36 percent, to finish at 2,447.76. Trade volume was moderate at 433.24 million shares worth 7.56 trillion won (US$7.05 billion), with gainers outnumbering losers 433 to 407.
