In announcing the time of the historic summit, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said logistical preparations are being finalized by an advance team in Singapore.

(LEAD) S. Korea asks N. Korea to grant immunity to officials at liaison office to open in North

SEOUL -- South Korea has asked North Korea to grant immunity to South Korean officials to be stationed in a liaison office the two Koreas recently agreed to establish in the North's border city of Kaesong, sources said Tuesday.

The two Koreas agreed last week to open a liaison office in the city "at an early date" at high-level talks to discuss steps for implementing promises made by their leaders in the historic April and May summits.

(LEAD) Cabinet endorses revision to minimum wage act despite labor protests

SEOUL -- The Cabinet endorsed a revision to the minimum wage act Tuesday despite strong protests from labor groups that the law offsets the effect of a rise in the legal wage threshold by including bonuses and benefits into its calculation.

Labor groups have urged President Moon Jae-in to veto the legislation, which passed through the National Assembly last week, as it calls for counting in some regular bonuses and welfare allowances when calculating the minimum wage.

Seoul reviews inter-Korean accords to prepare for resumption of cooperation with North

SEOUL -- South Korea's government has begun legal preparations in anticipation of the possible resumption of economic cooperation with North Korea, officials at the Ministry of Justice said Tuesday.

The ministry has launched a review of major inter-Korean agreements on economic exchanges to revise them in a way that protects the property rights of South Korean companies and strengthens the security of South Korean people staying in the North, they said.

Moon says a little inconvenience can help save environment

SEOUL -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday urged his people to help protect the environment by reducing their use of plastic and other disposables, saying that a little inconvenience could ensure the safety and convenience of all.

"Protecting the environment starts with our small steps. We can help reduce the use of oil and thus greenhouse gas and fine dust simply by reducing our use of plastic bags," Moon said in a message marking the U.N. World Environment Day.

Study says girls more prone to smartphone addiction than boys

SEOUL -- Girls are twice as prone to smartphone addiction than boys, likely because they use more social networking and messaging services, according to research results released Tuesday.

The conclusions of a study team from Ewha Womans University in Seoul were that students who were female, consumed alcohol, had lower academic performance, did not feel refreshed in the morning and went to sleep after midnight were at a significantly higher risk of smartphone addiction. The results were based on research involving 1,796 adolescents -- 820 boys and 976 girls -- aged 14.9 on average. The study was published in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health.

BTS' Billboard success brings K-pop market one step further: Billboard

SEOUL -- BTS' recent success on the Billboard charts and its music awards mark a major step forward for the K-pop industry, Billboard said Tuesday, attributing the Korean boy band's success to efforts to challenge the conventions of the global music industry.

"The key to BTS' success lies with their musicality, which is definitely different from previous K-pop singers," the U.S. music chart operator said in a written interview with Yonhap News Agency that was interpreted by its Korean branch.
