SEOUL, June 12 (Yonhap) -- President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday called on the people to actively participate in the local elections, also urging government efforts until the last minute to make them the fairest elections in history.
"I ask you to take special efforts to make the elections fair elections as they will be the first nationwide elections under this government," the president said in a Cabinet meeting held at his office Cheong Wa Dae one day before the elections.
"I ask you to do your utmost until the very last minute to make them fair elections so that we may say there is no longer any problems in the fair management of elections," he added, according to Cheong Wa Dae pool reports.
South Koreans will hit the polls to elect new heads of 17 provincial and metropolitan city governments, along with more than 4,000 lower administrative chiefs and local councilors in the quadrennial election.
"I also ask the people to actively take part in the election," Moon said. "Elections make up our future. Elections create hope for tomorrow, political developments, peace, mature local autonomy and decentralization."
