(LEAD) (World Cup) S. Korea stun Germany on way out of World Cup

KAZAN, Russia -- South Korea stunned Germany 2-0 while being eliminated in the group stage at the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, bringing the defending champions down with them.

South Korea needed to beat Germany by at least two goals and have Mexico defeat Sweden in the other Group F match Wednesday. The Taeguk Warriors took care of their own end at Kazan Arena in Kazan, some 800 kilometers east of Moscow, with Kim Young-gwon and Son Heung-min each scoring in second-half stoppage time. But Sweden made it all moot by beating Mexico 3-0 in Ekaterinburg.

Samsung, Apple reach settlement over design dispute

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday it has reached an agreement with Apple Inc. to settle the latest legal dispute surrounding alleged smartphone design infringement

"We cannot provide any details other than that we reached an agreement with Apple," a source from Samsung Electronics said.

(2nd LD) Koreas holding talks on cross-border road connection

SEOUL -- The two Koreas are holding working-level talks Thursday to discuss plans to connect roads over the border amid a thaw in inter-Korean relations.

The meeting began at 10 a.m. on the northern side of the truce village of Panmunjom, according to the unification ministry. Vice Transport Minister Kim Jeong-ryeol leads South Korea's delegation, and his North Korean counterpart is Pak Ho-yong, vice minister for land and environmental protection.

Korean Air chief grilled over suspected tax evasion

SEOUL -- Korean Air Lines Co. Chairman Cho Yang-ho appeared Thursday for prosecution questioning over allegations of tax evasion, breach of trust and embezzlement.

Cho, 69, appeared at the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office at around 9:30 a.m.

(LEAD) Pompeo: N. Korea understands scope of U.S. request for denuclearization

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed confidence Wednesday that North Korea understands the scope of the U.S. request for denuclearization.

Speaking at a Senate hearing, the top U.S. diplomat refused to discuss details of ongoing negotiations between the countries to dismantle the regime's nuclear weapons program.

Officials to hold emergency meeting on Yemeni asylum seekers

SEOUL -- The government will hold an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss measures to cope with a recent surge in the number of people arriving on the southern island of Jeju from Yemen seeking asylum, the Justice Ministry said.

Over 500 people from the war-torn country have come to Jeju since early this year and most of them have applied for refugee status.
