Major tech giants warming up for H2 smartphone battle

All News 08:35 July 04, 2018

SEOUL, July 4 (Yonhap) -- Major tech giants are preparing for the release of new flagship models in the second half of 2018, with Samsung Electronics Co. anticipated to make an early start by showcasing the Galaxy Note 9 early next month, industry watchers said Wednesday.

Samsung Electronics said earlier this month it will unveil the successor to the Galaxy Note 8 phablet in New York on Aug. 9.

While Samsung has not provided any details on the upcoming flagship, industry watchers have been making various speculations, including an improved pen that can be used like a remote control for cameras or music players.

Other potential specifications include a 6.4-inch display and a 4,000 mAh battery, which would be a meaningful upgrade from the Galaxy Note 8's 6.3-inch display and 3,300 mAh battery. Samsung has been cautious over expanding the capacity of batteries in its flagships since the traumatic experience it had with the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone in 2016.

Samsung's rivals are also bracing for the high-end smartphone war in the saturated global market.

U.S. tech giant Apple Inc. is predicted to showcase three different models of iPhones in September, industry sources said.

LG Electronics Inc. is gearing up to unveil the LG V40 over the second half, which would be the first flagship to be released by the company since LG Group came under new leadership this month.

The LG V40 could come with a whopping five lens set up, with three of them installed at the back, namely standard, ultra-wide and zoom.

The upcoming LG flagship is anticipated to adopt a notch design as applied on the LG G7 ThingQ showcased earlier this year as well.

Besides Samsung and LG, smaller players like Google will release the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones that will sport a 5.4-inch and 6.2-inch display, respectively, industry watchers added.

LG's new V series phone and Pixel models are set to hit shelves around October.
