(LEAD) Sales of male's luxury items soar at online malls

SEOUL, July 5 (Yonhap) -- Luxury goods targeting male consumers are gaining popularity in South Korea amid an expansion of the male grooming market, online shopping malls said Thursday.

Gmarket, a major online shopping mall, said the company chalked up a 37 percent on-year increase in the number of imported luxury bags for men sold during the January-June period, above the 32 percent growth tallied from the overall imported luxury bags during the cited period.

Sales volume of wallets and shoes in the men's luxury goods category also jumped 18 percent and 16 percent on-year, respectively, the company said.

11st, another online shopping platform, said transaction volume at its men's imported luxury goods category rose 7 percent on-year in the first half of the year. The comparable figure for women stood at 5 percent, it said.

"As male grooming habits have become more common, demand for luxury bags has noticeably increased," a Gmarket official said.
