Pompeo holds out Vietnam model for N. Korea

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday held out a brighter future for North Korea, urging leader Kim Jong-un to follow the path to prosperity taken by Vietnam.

Pompeo was speaking at a business event in Hanoi, Vietnam, after completing a two-day trip to Pyongyang where he met with North Korean officials to discuss the details of a summit agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Kim.

U.S. senator accuses China of pulling N. Korea back

WASHINGTON -- An influential U.S. senator on Sunday accused China of pulling North Korea back from negotiations with the United States in order to gain leverage in a U.S.-China trade dispute.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who serves on the Armed Services Committee, was commenting on North Korea's angry reaction to what it said was U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's "unilateral and gangster-like" demand for complete denuclearization.

Choo Shin-soo breaks Rangers' single-season on-base record

SEOUL -- Texas Rangers' South Korean designated hitter Choo Shin-soo has broken the single-season franchise on-base record after extending his streak to 47 games.

In his final at-bat against the Detroit Tigers, Choo hit an infield single off reliever Victor Alcantara in the ninth inning in the Rangers' 3-0 win at Comerica Park in Detroit on Sunday (local time) to set a franchise record.

With the latest performance, Choo broke a tie with Julio Franco, who reached base in 46 consecutive games in 1993.

S. Korean president to promote S. Korea-India cooperation

NEW DELHI -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in was set to urge increased cooperation between his country and India in a series of meetings with top Indian officials Monday, along with a rare trip to a production facility of Samsung Electronics Co. in New Delhi, his office Cheong Wa Dae said.

Moon was scheduled to begin his day with a meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, followed by a meeting with India's Vice President Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu.

LG Display ranks No. 1 in AMOLED display panels for smartwatches: IHS Markit

SEOUL -- LG Display Co. ranked as the world's largest supplier of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays for smartwatches in 2017, data showed Monday, apparently helped by strong shipments to Apple Inc.

The South Korean display maker shipped 10.64 million units of AMOLED display panels for smartwatches last year, accounting for 41.4 percent of the global market, industry tracker IHS Markit's data showed. Samsung Display Co. followed with 34.8 percent at 8.95 million units.

Rangers' Choo Shin-soo becomes 3rd S. Korean to earn MLB All-Star selection

SEOUL -- Texas Rangers' Choo Shin-soo has become the third South Korean to earn selection to the Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game.

Choo made the American League roster for the 89th MLB All-Star Game as an outfielder, according to the list unveiled by the league office on Monday (Korean time). The All-Star rosters are comprised of 32 players each for the American League and the National League.

(LEAD) Repair workers visit N. Korea to prepare for reunions of separated families

SEOUL -- A group of government officials and repair workers visited North Korea on Monday to repair facilities in preparation for the upcoming reunions of war-separated families, the unification ministry said Monday.

The 22-member team crossed into the North at around 9 a.m. via the eastern land border to begin repair on facilities at a Mount Kumgang resort where reunions of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War will be held next month.

Daewoo Shipbuilding, Sembcorp Marine vying for $2 bln Chevron project

SEOUL -- Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) said Monday it is competing with Sembcorp Marine Ltd., a Singapore-based machinery company, to win a US$2 billion auction to build an offshore facility for U.S. energy giant Chevron.

DSME has been shortlisted in the bid to supply a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit for Chevron's deep-water energy exploration project off the United Kingdom, a person familiar with the matter told Yonhap News Agency over the phone.

(2nd LD) S. Korean golfer Kim Sei-young sets LPGA scoring records to win Thornberry Creek Classic

SEOUL -- South Korea's Kim Sei-young has claimed her seventh career LPGA title with a 72-hole scoring record on the tour.

Kim won the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic by nine strokes over Spain's Carlota Ciganda at Thornberry Creek at Oneida in Oneida, Wisconsin, on Sunday (local time). She fired a 7-under 65 in the final round for a four-day total of 31-under 257.

Army general sacked for sexual misconduct

SEOUL -- A South Korean Army division commander was dismissed Monday for allegedly sexually harassing female soldiers.

The 56-year-old one-star general was found to have touched a hand of a female subordinate against her wishes for three to four seconds in a car around March, according to Army investigators.
